Day 100: #SunriseProject
MEDIUM: Photography
BIO: After leaving the corporate world to pursue entrepreneurship in 2017, Kimberlee Karr came to the stark realization that she was bad at experiencing nature. Terrible at it, in fact. She just couldn’t see it. When she shared her conundrum with her friends, one of them suggested that she tune in to her five senses. Armed with this advice and her camera, Kimberlee started the practice of pausing to assess her surroundings by checking in with her senses every day. She's better at seeing the world around her now (better...not perfect), and she hopes that others with this same predicament can learn to stop and enjoy the beauty around them too.

I Venture Out Because…
In March 2020, our entire world changed. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, stay-at-home orders were put in place and businesses that weren’t “essential” were told to close their doors. Suddenly, things were very quiet. Calendars that were booked with gatherings and vacations were cleared and finding a reason to get out of bed in the morning became a little bit harder. On March 27, 2020, I started on a 100-day journey to photograph the sunrise for 100 days in a row. As the world shutdown around me, I needed a project—a reason to venture out in the morning. With life as I knew it becoming a thing of the past, I could still count on the sun rising every morning. It was the constant in my life, and it gave me hope and purpose. Venturing out to photograph the sunrise every day was a reminder that no matter what was happening in the world around me, nature never stopped. The flowers continued to bloom, the snow continued to melt, and the sun kept coming up every day. I found so much comfort in witnessing these simple things each morning. Before this project, I rarely allowed myself the time to pause and experience the beauty around me. But now, I make sure to take the time to breathe and let it all in.
